What FotoPass does
FotoPass is a free online tool that turns an ordinary phone photo into a properly formatted passport, visa, or ID photo. You pick your country, crop with a face guide, remove the background with AI, and download a print-ready file or an A4 sheet with multiple copies.
The tool runs entirely in your browser. Your photo is never uploaded to our servers, which means your personal image stays on your device from start to finish.
Why we built it
Most passport photo tools fall into one of two traps. Either they charge a subscription for what is essentially a crop and a resize, or they offer a generic square crop that ignores the actual biometric rules each country publishes.
We wanted a tool that did three things well: use the correct verified size for every supported country, remove the background cleanly so the photo is accepted, and stay completely free with no watermark or signup. That is what you see on the homepage.
How we verify specifications
Every country page on this site cites the official government source used to build it, along with a verification date. Photo rules change, sometimes without much notice. Germany, for example, moved to digital-only biometric photos in May 2025, and the UAE periodically updates its Emirates ID file size cap.
When you use our size chart, the table links directly to the official page for each country. If a specification on our site does not match the official source, send us the link and we will correct it within 48 hours.
How the AI background removal works
Background removal is powered by MediaPipe, an open-source segmentation model released by Google. The model downloads once to your browser and then runs locally. It is the same approach used by several commercial tools, but we run it on your device rather than on a server, which is why your photo never leaves your browser.
On the first use, your browser downloads about 3 MB of model files. After that, the model is cached and the tool works offline.
What FotoPass is not
We are not affiliated with any government agency or embassy. We do not issue documents. We do not guarantee that a photo produced by our tool will be accepted by any particular authority, because acceptance always depends on the receiving office and the current official rules.
Always confirm the requirement on the official government page before you print or submit. We link to those pages on every country and size guide.
